Fairy tales...

I've been reading and reflecting on some books I read in college. One of which is from my "Great Christian Writers" class. We studied a variety of Christian writers and read their works. There was one writer in particular that I did not understand, and was at first, a bit turned off. We had studied his book of "Fairy Tales". My bias simply came from neglecting to delve into them ever before, and to me, unfamiliar territory is much less inviting. Stories of kings and queens, princesses, fairies and creatures unknown to our eyes darted out at me from the page. I soon over came my fears of the unknown and began enjoying this lovely set of tales from the Great Christian writer: George MacDonald (1824-1905).

An excerpt from George MacDonald's CROSS PURPOSES in the book "The Complete Fairy Tales".

Background: Children Richard and Alice are lost in Fairyland
"In a moment they were in total darkness. Alice clung to Richards arm, and murmured, almost against her will, 'Dear Richard!' It was strange that fear should speak like love; but it was in Fairyland. It was strange, too, that as soon as she spoke thus, Richard should fall in love with her all at once. But what was more curious still was, that, at the same moment, Richard saw her face. In spite of her fear, which had made her pale, she looked very lovely."

did I tell you I LOVE George MacDonald?! His language is so poetic, descriptive, and infused by grace and truth. His romances are absolutely as good as his fairytales. search for 'unabridged george macdonald online' and you can find a bunch of his manuscripts as free online txt files for download.
