How Great Our Joy

Church on Sunday reminded me of whom the Lord first reviled His glory to when the Christ child was born............ Shepherds. The shepherds in that day were bad, dishonest thieves, unworthy of even testifying in court. They were like gangsters with a job. :-) The Lord's glory was revealed to these people. They were so overwhelmed they went straight to Bethlehem, a small city, and found Joseph and Mary and the Christ child and testified of the glory that was revealed. "Glory to God in the Highest and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests", the heavenly host said. The shepherds proclaimed the message they heard with great Joy! How much more should we, oh ye of little faith, proclaim the message of Christ's birth with great joy?! We have been revealed through God's word and the Spirit of what we can testify.

I was playing through Christmas hymns tonight and was reminded by a friend of how I can be joyful even in our world of heart ache and difficulty. Our God is our peace and joy! HE is the GOOD Shepherd. I will share the favorite hymn with you:

While by the sheep we watched at night,
Glad tidings brought an angel bright.
How great our joy! Great our joy!
Joy, joy, joy! Joy, joy, joy!
Praise we the Lord in Heav'n on high!
Praise we the Lord in Heav'n on high!

There shall be born, so He did say,
In Bethlehem a Child today.
How great our joy! Great our joy!
Joy, joy, joy! Joy, joy, joy!
Praise we the Lord in Heav'n on high!
Praise we the Lord in Heav'n on high!

There shall the Child lie in a stall,
This Child Who shall redeem us all.
How great our joy! Great our joy!
Joy, joy, joy! Joy, joy, joy!
Praise we the Lord in Heav'n on high!
Praise we the Lord in Heav'n on high!

This Gift of God we’ll cherish well,
That ever joy our hearts shall fill.
How great our joy! Great our joy!
Joy, joy, joy! Joy, joy, joy!
Praise we the Lord in Heav'n on high!
Praise we the Lord in Heav'n on high!

Valerie, thank you for these reminders. . .I don't think I ever realized the more than lowly spot of shepherds (gangsters with jobs!) in the social spectrum. The hymn's words are beautiful. . .will just have to imagine how much more so were you singing them. A blessed holiday season to you.
